Symptoms to watch for

  1. Early phase (days 1–7 of symptoms)
    • Fever (often >38.3 °C)
    • Muscle aches, especially in the thighs / hips / back
    • Fatigue
    • Headache
    • Sometimes nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
  2. Late phase (4–10 days after onset)
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath
    • Rapid escalation of respiratory distress — seek emergency care immediately

What to do

  1. If you have any of the symptoms above, contact a clinician immediately and mention recent travel on the MV Hondius and possible Andes virus exposure.
  2. If you are well, continue monitoring temperature and breathing daily through the end of your incubation window.
  3. Do not self-diagnose. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is rare — most people aboard will not develop it — but it progresses fast and benefits from early supportive care.
